File Your Self-Employed Accounts & Self Assessment
Need an accountant to prepare your year-end self-employed accounts and file your Self Assessment tax return? Our fixed-price online service takes care of your accounts, tax calculation and HMRC filing from one straightforward annual fee.
What does it mean to file self-employed accounts?
If you are self-employed as a sole trader, you do not normally file annual company accounts with Companies House. Instead, your business records are used to prepare your year-end accounts, calculate your taxable trading profit and complete the self-employment section of your Self Assessment tax return.
The relevant figures are then reported to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). We can handle the complete process: review your records, prepare your accounts, calculate your tax position, send everything to you for approval and submit your tax return electronically to HMRC.
Simple answer: send us your bookkeeping records and we can take care of your self-employed year-end accounts and Self Assessment filing for you.

| Information | Examples | Why We Need It |
|---|---|---|
| Sales & income | Invoices, sales reports and payment platform records | To establish your business turnover |

| Business assets | Equipment, computers, machinery or vehicles | To consider accounting treatment and capital allowances |
| Other personal income | Employment, dividends, savings or property income | Where relevant to your overall Self Assessment |
| Previous tax information | Previous accounts, tax return and tax calculation | To maintain continuity between accounting periods |

Do Self-Employed People Have to File Annual Accounts?
A sole trader is different from a limited company. A limited company is a separate legal entity with its own company accounts filing obligations. A sole trader is an individual carrying on a business personally.
Sole traders therefore do not normally send statutory company accounts to Companies House. Instead, their accounting records are used to establish the income and expenses of the business and calculate its trading profit.
Those figures are then used when dealing with the individual's tax reporting obligations to HMRC. Preparing proper year-end accounts can therefore be valuable even though a set of company accounts is not being filed at Companies House.
Well-prepared self-employed accounts can help you understand business performance, identify relevant expenditure, support accurate tax reporting and provide useful financial information when applying for a mortgage or business finance.
Making Tax Digital for Self-Employed People
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how qualifying sole traders and landlords keep records and provide information to HMRC.
Qualifying income is broadly your gross income from self-employment and property before deducting expenses. Where MTD applies, compatible software is used to maintain digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC.
Year-end tax work is still required. Relevant adjustments, allowances, reliefs and other income still need to be dealt with when completing your tax affairs for the year.
Already mandated into MTD? Please contact us before purchasing a standard year-end-only package so that we can confirm the appropriate service for you.

Self-Employed Accounts Filing FAQs
Straightforward answers to common questions about preparing self-employed accounts and filing tax information with HMRC.
Where do I file self-employed accounts?
Sole traders do not normally file annual company accounts with Companies House. Your business figures are used when preparing your Self Assessment tax return and reporting your self-employment income and expenses to HMRC.
Do I need an accountant if I am self-employed?
There is no general requirement for a sole trader to appoint an accountant. Many self-employed people nevertheless use one to prepare reliable year-end figures, deal with their tax return, consider business expenditure and save time.
What is the difference between self-employed accounts and Self Assessment?
Your accounts summarise the financial activity of your business. Your Self Assessment tax return reports the relevant taxable information to HMRC and can also include other personal income and gains. Figures calculated from your business accounts therefore feed into your tax return.
Can you file my Self Assessment as well as preparing my accounts?
Yes. Our standard fixed-price year-end service includes preparation of your self-employed accounts and completion and electronic filing of your Self Assessment tax return with HMRC, subject to the scope of the service.
What records do you need from me?
Typically we need details of your business income and expenses, bank transactions, business assets and relevant supporting records. We may also need information about other income that needs to be included on your Self Assessment return.
Can you work with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent or Sage?
Yes. We can work with records maintained using common cloud accounting packages including Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage, as well as suitable spreadsheet records.
Can I change from my existing accountant?
Yes. Changing accountant is normally straightforward. Once appointed, we can request the appropriate professional information from your previous accountant to help provide continuity.
Does Making Tax Digital apply to self-employed people?
Yes, where the qualifying conditions are met. MTD for Income Tax applies from April 2026 where qualifying income is over £50,000, from April 2027 where qualifying income is over £30,000, and from April 2028 where qualifying income is over £20,000.
How long does it take to prepare self-employed accounts?
Our typical turnaround is around 7–14 days once we have received the records and information required to complete the work. More complex cases can take longer.
How much does it cost to file self-employed accounts?
Our fixed-price self-employed accounts service starts at £399 + VAT for businesses with annual sales up to £30,000 and gross assets up to £100,000. Larger standard packages are £599 + VAT and £799 + VAT.
